Edwin Hewitt was born in Red Wing MN. He attended Hobart College for a year before completing his degree at the University of Minnesota. While studying at the University, Hewitt also attended the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts at night and worked in the office of Cass Gilbert during vacations. Hewitt studied at MIT for a year, and entered the office of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge in Boston, where he worked three and a half years.
